Short-term renting has gained traction as a style of travel for those tired of hotel hopping. Weeks- or months-long rentals of homes or apartments in places like Rome, Paris, and Barcelona have grown increasingly popular with families, retirees, and language students. The practice is especially popular in regions, like Europe, with long vacations that can leave houses or apartments in desirable locations vacant for up to two months per year.
Britain is an especially fertile market, real estate agents say, because of the British government's rent-a-room program that gives homeowners a break from taxes on the first £4,250 they receive in rent per year.
